Apathy is the sacrilege of egalitarian humanity © Misan Harriman superbly exhibiting for a second year at HOPE 93 I) BEING (published 15 May 2026 with ongoing updates) DISCLAIMER : Being homeless since February 2026 out of Hackney Council’s apathy, neglect and sadism attitude – under Labour mayoralship – makes this piece difficult to write for many reasons! I am purposely not putting any figures on homelessness in London as the issue covers an umbrella of (invisible) statuses that makes it impossible to count; I privilege words to emphasis on hardship and horror rather than using numbers (YET “ Hackney saw the largest increase, with a 56% rise ”) that overshadow the multiple reasons one becomes roofless as well as depicting the real impact it has on victims of homelessness camouflaging environmental / violence topics. Prejudice and stereotypes go rampant while gangrening the big issue! In 2016 and 2021, I voted Sadiq Khan to be Labour Mayor of London. Despite admiring Kh...

From #FreeSatpalRam to funding racism

Image
Born and bred to Indian Parents settling in Birmingham in the 60’s, Satpal Ram , aged 20 in 1986, went to a local Indian restaurant with friends. When six white people acted to provoke a situation using verbal and racist abuse, Ram reacted firmly. One of the abusers, Stuart Pearce , stabbed him in the face with a broken glass, he self-defenced with a knife, accidently killing Pearce. Until July 2000, journalists were not allowed to interview prisoners serving life sentences for murder, regardless of any claims of wrongful conviction ;  The Guardian published a disturbing story after visiting a 34 year old man who had spent 13 years in prisons around England . Prior to 2000, the only method Ram’s family had to get his voice heard due to miscarriage of justice, racism and physical abuse in jail, was to make big noise in the nascent British-Asian music scene of the mid 90’s while All things Asian were also emerging. London born and bred but signed to Virgin France , Asian D...

Why, in the charity landscape, abuse in any forms, is going under the radar?

Autumn 2022 marks the fifth anniversary of #MeToo online, originally created in 2006 by Tarana Burke , following Ronan Farrow ’s disclosure about sexual predator film mogul Harvey Weinstein . Despite topics & investigations revealing sexual violence on women, children & at times on men in worldwide media, why, five years on, being heard is still problematic? Why, in the charity landscape, abuse in any forms, is going under the radar? In this post, I’ll give a description on how, as a volunteer in a community garden, abuse is full on. I’ll be giving some short samples as of today 30 November 2022 , but will fill the space from time to time. In a very tranquil green space belonging to the council, juxtaposing an east London river, a community garden welcomes volunteers: growing vegetables, harvesting, composting & so on. I never had any interest in gardening, but in August 2020 , in between lockdowns, I was extremely suicidal without necessarily wanting to die. I was d...
